While recently visiting Copenhagen and enjoying the delights of its Jazz festival, I came across an artist by the name of Tal R. He had designed this year’s festival poster, ‘Jazz Is Not Born Yet’.
Tal R is one of Denmark’s most famous contemporary artists. He creates work’s which are full of movement, combining grafitti, children’s drawings and illustrations.¬†Tal R was born in Israel to a Jewish family, with a Danish mother and Czech father, but grew up in Copenhagen and as such his work is composed of various cultural elements. He describes himself as a bag lady that collects inspiration from the city’s garbage cans as well as from literature, music, comic strips, computer games and his own personal history.
The poster tells a variety of stories which are all open to interpretation representing jazz as something which is changeable, continually undergoing rebirth.
Take a look at some of his work for yourself, a selection of which is detailed on the Saatchi gallery website.
The image above is from one of the many space walks that will be carried out by the seven-member crew of Space Shuttle Atlantis during its 11-day mission to service the Hubble Space Telescope for the fifth and final time.
The image is actually a screen-grab taken from NASA’s live web-cast of the space walks on its NASA TV website where it is possible to watch each 6.5 hour space walk live, complete with audio and NASA commentary. It is pretty remarkable to think that what you are watching is taking place live, 350 miles above Earth.
19 years after Hubble’s launch, the STS-125 mission aims to provide Hubble with the addition of new science instruments and will repair other critical hardware to extend the telescope’s life.
The space walks can be watched live via the NASA TV website: www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html and more information about the STS-125 mission can be found on NASA’s mission pages: www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/hubble/servicing/SM4/main/index.html

David and I recently attended the latest STIR lecture from Design London. The lecture was entitled CROSS OVER and explored how a new approach to design has inspired a new genre in the built environment, but also how this approach can be applied to designing a new architecture for business.
The lecture included three speakers: Prof. Max Fordham OBE, a pioneer of the green building movement and winner of the Design Council’s major annual award, the Prince Philip Designers Prize 2008; Dr Irving Wladawsky-Berger, Chairman Emeritus, IBM Academy of Technology; and Prof. David Gann, Head of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Imperial College London.
The STIR lecture series continues to be extremely successful with its wide-ranging and thought-provoking subjects, that encourage debate even when you have left the lecture theatre!
The lectures are free and take place at Imperial College London, South Kensington. For more information regarding upcoming STIR lectures visit www.designlondon.net

I woke up this morning to find that Guildford had received its fair share of the 20 centimetres of snow that descended on London and the south-east over night.
Not only am I unable to get into London, I don’t think I’ll be getting any post today either!
