Correct underlying barriers rather than cover them
Accessibility overlays add a JavaScript widget or toolbar to a website, but they do not correct its underlying structure. Treating an overlay as an automatic fix can leave users facing barriers while giving website owners misplaced confidence about accessibility.
Build inclusion into the project from the beginning. Keep designers involved during development so they can check that their designs are executed properly and learn how technical choices affect the experience. For an existing website, focus improvements on the structure and code rather than relying on a layer added over inaccessible components. Retrofitting inclusion is harder when deadlines leave little time for changes.
In 2025, the Federal Trade Commission approved a final order requiring accessiBe to pay $1 million over misleading accessibility claims. The order bars unsupported claims that its automated products can make any website WCAG-compliant or maintain compliance over time.
