Setbacks can explain progress that success stories cannot
Explain why a promising sustainability initiative fell short, not simply that it missed its goal. The commentary "Credibility in ESG Means Showing Your Work" argues that both wins and failures are learning moments, and recommends sharing lessons with the ambition to inform, inspire and support collaboration.
Apply that approach by connecting the original commitment, the work undertaken and the lessons from the outcome. Describing an initiative alone is not enough: readers need to understand its impact and what the organisation learned. Give setbacks a place alongside achievements rather than presenting sustainability solely as a succession of successes.
Disclosure also has constraints. Publicly traded companies' marketing and reporting requirements can discourage or preclude content about missteps. Recognise those limits while looking for opportunities to explain failures honestly and share learning that could help others working towards sustainability commitments.
